Burbage is Mr Gilliechattan’s Cockatoo. He is very

talkative and frequently quotes lines from Shakespeare

that seem uncannily apt. He’s almost 70 years old, and

is reputed to be a direct descendant of a parrot belonging

to Edward Alleyne, lead actor of “The Admiral’s Men” at

“The Globe.” Alleyne called his parrot Burbage too - as a

jibe at Richard Burbage, lead actor of “The Lord

Chamberlain’s Company” from “The Curtain,” saying:

“My Burbage hath a farre better memorie for his lines!

Fergus is the Postman’s faithful little Scottie dog.
He’s as black and shiny as a lump of coal and has
the temperament of a firecracker! He bristles all over
with mock ferocity, but the whole bloodthirsty illusion
is generally marred by his merrily wagging tail. Fergus
loves to accompany Jock on his daily round, usually
with his paws on the mail van’s dashboard and his
nose pressed up against the windscreen!

Eliza joined the Thyme family eight summers ago when
Lady Henny rescued her during an expedition to the
equatorial rainforest near Kisangani. Henny and her film
crew had discovered that gorillas have a complex language
consisting of both sounds and gestures. Tragically,
poachers killed Eliza’s mother and, as she was too young
to survive, Lady Henny brought her back to Scotland.
